In October 2016, Brent and I flew into Marmaris, Turkey for our first encounter with the new Hanse 57, Mariner.
A long held desire to cruise the Mediterranean had taken shape. It all started with a visit to the Sydney Boat show in 2014, where we were introduced to the concept of yacht syndication.
Our three week adventure began at the Marina in Marmaris
with a briefing from Metin, our valuable contact and problem solver in Turkey.
YSM provided a skipper for the first three days to familiarise us with the boat and introduce us to cruising in Turkey, which was very helpful to get started.
Our first week was spent sailing east from Marmaris to the Gulf of Fethiye. Peaceful settled weather was ideal for getting used to the boat and learning how she sailed in the fairly light winds.
Mastering the electronics was a challenge, but many pleasant hours were spent at anchor studying manuals between swims and beers.
Friends of ours joined us in week 2 and we explored the beautiful Gulf of Fethiye and its many anchorages. Roman ruins dot the shoreline everywhere. Ancient Lycian rock tombs were a short hike up the hillside from the cove at Tomb Bay.
A highlight was a trip up the Dalyan River to the historic site of Caunos, a well preserved Roman town, where we hiked up to the Acropolis for amazing views of the Delta below.
Although it was the end of the season, several quayside and beachside restaurants were still open for some amazing dining experiences. But the favourite was dining in the cockpit in the twilight at anchor on Mariner.
The cruising grounds in this area are stunningly beautiful with wooded slopes right down to the waters edge and beautifully clear water. The weather we encountered was near perfect, 26 degrees, water temperature 23 degrees, and blue skies for 3 weeks! The Turkish people were extremely friendly and helpful. The local food and produce were lovely, and the Turkish wine and beer very drinkable.
Our first trip was an outstanding success, and we look forward to our next adventure sailing the Aegean coast of Turkey and the Dodecanese islands of Greece in 2017.
